So what do we think about design?
Here at Jet, we’re in two minds about great design.
On the one hand, we love getting our artists beret on and creating something that looks great, and catches peoples eye. We like texture, and colour, and shapes. We like photography, and light, and the patterns it makes. We like getting creative and coming up with something original.
On the other hand, we like getting our engineers hard hat on. We like planning and logic. We like coding (the curly brackets are our favourite) and we like algorithms and functions and flow control. We like a system that is designed to efficiently achieve specific goals, and we like finding new ways to overcome constraints and innovate our way out of problems.
The left sides of our brains like looking at statistics and drawing conclusions. We like mixing numbers up and creating something insightful. We like menus and graphs and diagrams and we can walk into Curry’s and know what all the abbreviations stand for.
The right sides of our brains like fonts and motifs, page layout and ergonomics. We know the difference between em-dashes and en-dashes. We can walk into an art gallery and say what it all means... (or at least, as much as anyone really can.)
(The left side knows that in reality the mind isn’t as simple as ‘creative on one side and logical on the other’... but the right side likes the metaphor because it’s makes writing the difficult front page of the website altogether more interesting.)
